FAQs

Who is the Rookie Program for?

Everyone! Regardless of gender, fitness level, or cycling experience – everyone is welcome. Whether you're preparing for your first cycling event or simply want to ride with a motivated group and become more confident on your bike, you'll find your place here.

How often, how long, and where does the training take place?

Training sessions take place three times per week:

  • Wednesday evenings (2–3 hours)

  • Friday evenings (2–3 hours)

  • Sunday mornings (occasionally extending into the early afternoon, depending on the training schedule)

There will be various meeting points in and around Hamburg, ensuring that participants from different parts of the city have convenient access to training throughout the program.

What can I expect from the training?

Your safety and confidence on the bike are our top priorities. We begin with the fundamentals of group riding and bike handling, gradually building skills and confidence step by step.

Training rides start at manageable distances of around 30 kilometers. Over the following weeks, the volume increases steadily, making even a 100-kilometer ride achievable by the end of the program.

In addition to practical riding sessions, we cover important topics such as nutrition, equipment, and clothing. Expect a balanced mix of theory and practice – everything you need to feel safe, confident, and strong on your bike.

Do I need a road bike – or even a new one?

No! Simply bring the bike you feel most comfortable riding. Whether it's a road bike, gravel bike, or another sporty bicycle, the most important thing is that you enjoy riding it.

The equipment is secondary; your motivation matters most. A road or gravel bike may offer some advantages, but whether your bike is brand new or several years old, it's about you – not your bike.

Do I need previous road cycling experience?

Not at all! The Rookie Program is specifically designed for complete beginners. Over the course of 12 weeks, you'll learn everything you need to know for your first cycling event.

Already have some experience? Great! You're just as welcome and can continue to develop your skills alongside the group.

How fit do I need to be?

Exactly as fit as you are right now. Everyone starts somewhere, and you'll naturally improve throughout the 12-week program.

What matters isn't where you begin – it's staying consistent. Every step forward is a success.

Can I participate if I'm nervous or lacking confidence?

Absolutely! In fact, that's one of the best reasons to join.

Many participants start with uncertainties and quickly become much more confident riders after just a few weeks. We'll support you every step of the way and help you build confidence in a safe and encouraging environment.

Can I join without participating in the ADAC Cyclassics?

Of course! The Rookie Program is completely independent of race participation.

You can join simply to have fun, learn new skills, improve your fitness, and become part of a great cycling community. Whether or not you decide to ride the ADAC Cyclassics afterward is entirely up to you.

What is the minimum age requirement?

Participants must be at least 16 years old.

Whether you're completely new to cycling or already active in sports, you'll be welcome in the program.

Please note: Participation in the ADAC Cyclassics event itself requires riders to be at least 18 years old.

What should I bring to the first training session?

Our first meeting on May 29 is a relaxed introductory session where we'll get to know each other and discuss the program.

For your first ride, please bring:

  • A helmet (mandatory)

  • Your bicycle (any type)

  • Something to drink

  • Sportswear (cycling-specific clothing is optional)

  • Sturdy shoes or cycling shoes (with or without clipless pedals)

We'll go through everything in detail during the first meeting.

What is the difference between the Rookie Program and regular Cyclassics training?

The event organizer does not offer a performance-focused Cyclassics training program.

Our focus is on safety, group riding skills, and building a strong foundation rather than performance and racing results. You'll learn everything you need for a safe and successful event experience – the fitness gains will come naturally along the way.

Do I need to be a member of a cycling club?

No!

You do not need a club membership to participate. Simply register, join the group, and start riding.

The Rookie Program is open to everyone who enjoys cycling, learning new skills, and being part of a supportive community.
