Further afield, the town of Salem has an interesting bewitched past, while Marblehead is a good place to clear your head with a big hit of sea air. Just a few miles southeast of Salem, Marblehead's narrow winding streets are excellent for exploring on foot.

A worthwhile day trip is beautiful Cape Cod, with its interesting past of fishing and whaling. Today it's better known as the playground of presidents and supermodels. Nestled among the scrub oak, pine and sea grass of this 65 mile (105km) long scythe-shaped peninsula are dozens of small villages and towns most notably Falmouth, reminsicent of the Cornish costline. Whether you're an academic, a history boffin, or a visitor to the US's marvellous New England region, Boston is a contrasting city of old and new, top notch university's and competitive sports teams, leafy suburbs and modern buildings, where tourists and business people easily mingle.
