Hub of the sparkling Cote d'Azure, Nice is a delightful and historical town with easy access to Antibes, St Tropez, Monaco and the Provence region. Situated in the sweeping Baie des Anges, vacationers have been flocking here for nearly 200 years and today it enjoys a vibrant and often fully-booked out summer season.
Enjoy fine French dining, stroll along the regal promenade, explore the lanes of the old town and hills beyond, feast your eyes upon the many outstanding galleries and museums, or simply soak up the Mediterranean sun on the pebbly beach.
Nice's old town is a delightful mish-mash of winding streets, lively squares and Genoese, Provençal, medieval and baroque architecture, all presided over by a 92m hill known as Le Château. The park atop the hill has spectacular views of the old town, the bay and the port with its pretty Île-de-Beauté square bordered by ochre houses.
Vieux Nice also has plenty of cafes and restaurants, and is a top spot in the evenings, with a swag of places to booze and boogie.
The city has many oustanding architectural features and perhaps the most exotic is the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the exiled Nicolas II with its six onion domes and the mix of grey marble, brightly coloured ceramic and red brick fascias. However, more baroque-styled churches are found all over the city, the highlights being the Cathédrale Sainte Réparate, Saint-François-de-Paule, Saint-Martin-Saint-Augustin and Chapelle de la Miséricorde.
