Cutting a huge swath across Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba is Canada's heartland prairie country. Golden fields of wheat, or sunflowers, stretch forever, interrupted only by the Rockys to the west.

The quaintly named Blackfoot Indian heritage site - Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, near Fort Macleod is a popular attraction and the Riding Mountain National Park is a forested oasis in the Manitoba prairies where bison and bike riders roam.

While in the area make sure you get to the world famous Calgary Stampede in July, the highlight of which is the chuck wagon race and rodeo.
