The romance of Edinburgh is undeniable. Whether you're there to celebrate the enormously popular Hogmany (New Year's eve) , or enjoy the varied entertainment of the annual Edinburgh Festival, the city's dramatic location and historic past add an appealing face to this vibrant Northern city.
Unmistakable as it presides over the city, the Edinburgh Castle's 1200 year history is deeply seated in Scottish folklore and nationalism. As far as great city castles go, its location is unsurpassed and has played a key role in unfolding English/Scottish political events over the centuries. Inside you can tour its palatial rooms and learn about its history and the view of the city from the gates is all-encompassing.
The Royal Mile runs in a straight line through the older part of the city eastwards to the Palace of Holyrood house at the bottom of the hill, and its medieval façade is lined with busking pipers, tartan shops, golfing and souvenir shops and many charming examples of olde-world Scotland. The baroque Holyrood Palace is the official Scottish residence for Her Majesty the Queen and where Mary Queen of Scots once lived. Looming beside the palace is Arthur's seat - one of several unusual rocky outcrops that preside over the city. The walking trail to it's summit is popular in the summer.
