This picture-perfect baroque palace of Schloss Nymphenburg, dating from 1664 is an fairy-tale experience. The former Royal residence boasts fabulous frescoes, incredible tapestries, an amazing porcelain museum and a gobsmacking English-style park highlighted by a central canal, a crystal and gilt-bedripped hunting lodge, Chinese teahouse, bathing house, witch's cottage and tropical greenhouses.

More palatial residences can be found at Schleissheim, including Neues Schloss Schleissheim, reconstructed Altes Schloss Schleissheim, Schloss Lustheim with its stunning baroque interior and Flugwerft Schleissheim, now the aviation branch of the Deutsches Museum. Another 'picture-postcard' location is Starnberg, a former royal retreat at the northern end of Lake Starnberg in the heart of the Five Lakes district. An excursion to the hill-top Benedictine monastery of Andechs is breathtaking in more ways than one.
