Lübeck in Germany's northernmost state, Schleswig-Holstein, is a glorious medieval town that's earned its place on UNESCO's World Heritage list. The altstadt was heavily bombed in WWII but has been sensitively rebuilt and the town's stately charm is apparent today. Lübeck is home to the delightful Marionettentheater (Puppet Theatre), which shouldn't be missed.
The North Frisian Islands off the north-western coast of Germany, reward those who make the trek with sunshine, sand dunes, sea and pure air. Much of this area is a national park, protecting sensitive dune areas. Paths and boardwalks are provided for strolling. Sylt, the main resort town is pretty crowded in the summer. Nearby the Harz Mountains rise picturesquely from the North German plain. They don't have the peaks and valleys of the Alps, but they offer a great all-seasons sports getaway without some of the Alpine tackiness and tourism. Boasting an incredible collection of museums, a proud heritage, some outstanding ancient architecture and pretty country scenery, German has a distinctive charcter making it a rewarding holiday experience. Hiring a car, especially in the south is a worthwhile option, allowing you to explore the many facets of this country at your own pace. BackAdd to your Save For Later
