Vienna's golden years as a cultural centre during the 18th and 19th centuries can be seen in its magnificent architecure, fine cathedrals, enlarged squares, and broad pedestrian streets. Much of this is attributed to Emperor Franz Joseph I, most notably the Hofburg (Imperial Palace). The lattice work spire of the large Gothic masterpiece of Stephasdom cathedral dominates the centre of Vienna, presiding over the grand opera houses (still popularly attended to this day) pedstrian malls and steely buildings. The Museum of Fine Arts and the Sigmund Freud Museum are popular. Contrary to popular belief, the Danube doesn't feature in Vienna's central locale. Outside the city centre is the splendid Baroque Belvedere Palace built for Prince Eugene of Savoy, with its sumptuous interior and magnificent gardens. BackAdd to your Save For Later
