Johannesburg, in Gauteng province, is the commercial hub of the country. It is a sprawling city of highrises and leafy suburbs, but one of the most interesting tours is a visit to the township of Soweto, site of important political uprisings that changed the tide of South Africa's history. Gold mining is central to the growth and wealth of this city and you can visit a mine at the restored turn-of-the-century village of Gold Reef City. The city also boasts many modern malls with excellent shopping, as well as an impressive choice of cultural entertainment.
